Selective visual odometry for accurate AUV localization

2015

In this paper we present a stereo visual odometry system developed for autonomous underwater vehicle localization tasks. The main idea is to make use of only highly reliable data in the estimation process, employing a robust keypoint tracking approach and an effective keyframe selection strategy, so that camera movements are estimated with high accuracy even for long paths. Furthermore, in order to limit the drift error, camera pose estimation is referred to the last keyframe, selected by analyzing the feature temporal flow. The proposed system was tested on the KITTI evaluation framework and on the New Tsukuba stereo dataset to assess its effectiveness on long tracks and different illumina…

Design and Calibration of a Specialized Polydioptric Camera Rig

2017

International audience; It has been observed in the nature that all creatures have evolved highly exclusive sensory organs depending on their habitat and the form of resources availability for their survival. In this project, a novel omnidirectional camera rig, inspired from natural vision sensors, is proposed. It is exclusively designed to operate for highly specified tasks in the field of mobile robotics. Navigation problems on uneven terrains and detection of the moving objects while the robot is itself in motion are the core problems that omnidirectional systems tackle. The proposed omnidirectional system is a compact and a rigid vision system with dioptric cameras that provide a 360° f…

Design and calibration of an omni-RGB+D camera

2016

International audience; In this paper, we present the design of a new camera combining both predator-like and prey-like vision features. This setup provides both a spherical RGB-view and a directional depth-view of the environment. The model and calibration of the full setup are described. A few examples will be given to demonstrate the interest and the versatility of such camera for robotics and video surveillance at the oral presentation.

Extrinsic calibration of heterogeneous cameras by line images

2014

International audience; The extrinsic calibration refers to determining the relative pose of cameras. Most of the approaches for cameras with non-overlapping fields of view (FOV) are based on mirror reflection, object tracking or rigidity constraint of stereo systems whereas cameras with overlapping FOV can be calibrated using structure from motion solutions. We propose an extrinsic calibration method within structure from motion framework for cameras with overlapping FOV and its extension to cameras with partially non-overlapping FOV. Recently, omnidirectional vision has become a popular topic in computer vision as an omnidirectional camera can cover large FOV in one image. Combining the g…

GPU-accelerated integral imaging and full-parallax 3D display using stereo-plenoptic camera system

2019

Abstract In this paper, we propose a novel approach to produce integral images ready to be displayed onto an integral-imaging monitor. Our main contribution is the use of commercial plenoptic camera, which is arranged in a stereo configuration. Our proposed set-up is able to record the radiance, spatial and angular, information simultaneously in each different stereo position. We illustrate our contribution by composing the point cloud from a pair of captured plenoptic images, and generate an integral image from the properly registered 3D information. We have exploited the graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration in order to enhance the integral-image computation speed and efficiency. We…

Depth Enhancement by Fusion for Passive and Active Sensing

2012

This paper presents a general refinement procedure that enhances any given depth map obtained by passive or active sensing. Given a depth map, either estimated by triangulation methods or directly provided by the sensing system, and its corresponding 2-D image, we correct the depth values by separately treating regions with undesired effects such as empty holes, texture copying or edge blurring due to homogeneous regions, occlusions, and shadowing. In this work, we use recent depth enhancement filters intended for Time-of-Flight cameras, and adapt them to alternative depth sensing modalities, both active using an RGB-D camera and passive using a dense stereo camera. To that end, we propose …

Extract information of polarization imaging from local matching stereo

2010

Since polarization of light was used in the field of computer vision, the research of polarization vision is rapidly growing. Polarization vision has been shown to simplify some important image understanding tasks that can be more difficult to be performed with intensity vision. Furthermore, it has computational efficiency because it only needs grayscale images and can be easily applied by a simple optical setup. Nowadays, we can find various types of polarization cameras in the market. However, they are very expensive. In our work, we will study and develop a low price polarization camera setup with parallel acquisition using a stereo system. This system requires only two general cameras e…

Choosing local matching score method for stereo matching based-on polarization imaging

2010

Polarization imaging is a powerful tool to observe hidden information from an observed object. It has significant advantages, such as computational efficiency (it only needs gray scale images) and can be easily applied by adding a polarizer in front of a camera. Many researchers used polarization in various areas of computer vision, such as object recognition, segmentation and so on. However, there is very little research in stereo vision based on polarization. Stereo vision is a well known technique for obtaining depth information from pairs of stereo digital images. One of the main focuses of research in this area is to get accurate stereo correspondences. In our work, we will study and d…

A new method for linear affine self-calibration of stationary zooming stereo cameras

2012

This paper presents a simple, yet effective, method to recover the affine structure of a scene from a (stereo) pair of stationary zooming cameras. The proposed method solely relies on point correspondences across images and no knowledge about the scene whatsoever is required. Our method exploits implicit properties of the projective camera matrices of zooming cameras and allows to estimate the affine structure of a scene by solving a linear system of equations. The 3D reconstruction results obtained by using our method, on both real and simulated data, have remarkably validated its feasibility.

3-D shape reconstruction in an active stereo vision system using genetic algorithms

2003

Abstract The recovery of 3-D shape information (depth) using stereo vision analysis is one of the major areas in computer vision and has given rise to a great deal of literature in the recent past. The widely known stereo vision methods are the passive stereo vision approaches that use two cameras. Obtaining 3-D information involves the identification of the corresponding 2-D points between left and right images. Most existing methods tackle this matching task from singular points, i.e. finding points in both image planes with more or less the same neighborhood characteristics. One key problem we have to solve is that we are on the first instance unable to know a priori whether a point in t…
